Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Thursday at a press conference that if Godzilla attacked the country, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) would be called upon to deliver "disaster relief." Ishiba also said Japan would respond in kind to a threat from Mothra, though he added that the use of the JSDF could not be assumed in the event of an alien invasion: Under the constitution, the JSDF can only be mobilized for defense, so obviously if the aliens came in peace, there would be no legal justification for their deployment.
Ishiba's statements marked the third day of discussions among Japanese officials about the existence of aliens, UFOs and other unlikely boogeymen. On Dec. 18 -- in response to a question by an opposition parliamentarian -- the government issued a written statement saying that it has no evidence that UFOs exist and is not taking any action to verify their existence or develop contingency plans should they enter Japanese airspace (and assuming they are real).
